SUSHMA SWARAJ

Sushma Swaraj was born on 14 February 1952 at Ambala Cantt, Haryana, to Hardev Sharma and Shrimati Laxmi Devi. She was educated at Sanatan Dharma College in Ambala Cantonment and earned a bachelor’s degree with majors in Sanskrit and Political Science .

In 1970 Swaraj was closely associated with Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), It was the student wing of RSS and she went on to join the Janata Party. In fact, Swaraj was an active participant  in the anti-Emergency movement. In 1973 She started practicing as a Supreme Court lawyer after passing her LL.B. at Punjab University. In 1977 She became the country’s youngest cabinet minister at the mere age of 25 . Swaraj became the Janata Party’s State President in Haryana, a position she held for four years from 1979. In 1984 Swaraj joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and was eventually appointed secretary of the party. She held the position of the all India Secretary of the party for two years. She played a main role in strengthening the BJP across the country through the 1990s.

Swaraj’s achievements went on and on till 2014 where he pursued the prestigious External Affairs portfolio under the Modi government. She was the second woman to take charge of this ministry after Indira Gandhi. This year she even became the first Indian to address the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) meeting as the guest of honour. This was a proud moment for India, and also it was the country’s first invite in five decades .

On 6 August 2019, Sushma Swaraj reportedly suffered a heart attack in the evening after which she was rushed to AIIMS New Delhi, where she later died of a cardiac arrest. It is definitely a huge loss for our country and also it is not an easy thing for our country to accept the loss of one of the strongest woman of India.
